Artist Statement
This series was created in reponse to the opening of the new South Carolina History and Archives building. It extends themes from earlier work by incorporating images of natural objects and architecture suggesting a relationship between cultural and natural boundaries.
Imagery includes scanned sticks and construction photographs of the History and Archives building. Through the juxtaposition of contemporary and historical (basic) architectural forms, viewers are invited to question their initial preconceptions concerning cultural significance and relative value .
Process and Materials
Natural objects are collected, scanned and combined with
digitized photography. This process, while utilizing technology, embodies the same aesthetic and empirical decision making that is applied to painting or drawing with traditional media. The images are digitally printed on archival paper in edititons of 20.
