Guidelines for Speakers,
Chairs & Discussants:

The time allocated for each paper is 24 minutes:  15 for the presentation, three to four for the discussant, four or five minutes for questions and discussion, and a minute to make the transition to the next paper.
Speakers with digital presentation materials should upload their files prior to the beginning of the session, or, even better, early in the morning before the sessions start.  Bring a CD or USB memory stick with your file to the presentation room at least ten minutes before the session starts. Do not rely on special software or an internet connection - access to neither can be assured.  Each room will have an LCD projector for Power Point or HTML presentations and an overhead projector for transparencies.  Analog 35-mm slide projectors will NOT be provided. Although each presentation time slot is allocated 24 minutes, speakers should finish within 15 minutes and will be asked to sum up if not done at that time.
The primary role of the chair is to maintain an orderly progression of presentations and to see that the session stays on time.  Chairs should not allow paper presentations to take more than fifteen (15) minutes.  This will allow nine minutes for discussion and questions.  Chairs should not let discussants go beyond five minutes.  If there is a cancellation or no-show (forbid the thought), chairs should not proceed with the next paper but may encourage discussion or take a short break to fill the void and stay on schedule.
The role of SEDAAG discussant is both formal and informal.  Formal in that professional courtesy prevails and we adhere as closely as possible to the schedule of a total 24 minutes allocated to each  paper.  It's informal, in that most discussants are friendly and supportive and are often on a first-name basis.  On the other hand, discussants should strive to present some constructive or critical suggestions where appropriate.  The objective is to read the paper ahead of time, jot down a few  concepts or questions, and give a brief summary lasting three or four minutes (it goes by very fast).  After that you can help the chair to field and generate questions from  the audience.  Discussants should not attempt to make a presentation.
Discussants should leave time for questions from the audience and may assist the chair in soliciting them.   As a discussant, you should not prepare presentation materials (no visuals or written text).  Simply be prepared to speak on the subject briefly to develop context, point out linkages, or raise some questions.  You should be fine if you read the paper ahead of time and give it a little thought.
