Checkpoint Charlie Program
Students who have taken German 401 and German 401P or plan to take
it, have the opportunity to apply to live with a German family and
assist in an English class in a German elementary school for one
month during the summer, normally from mid-June to mid-July. Since
this program is sponsored by the Checkpoint Charlie Foundation,
student volunteers are only required to pay for their flight to
Germany and spending money. Room and board is paid for by the Foundation.
During the month in Sachsen-Anhalt, Germany, students are required
to work 20 hours/week in the elementary school assisting in English
classes and observing and possibly assisting in other classes as
well. The American students have the opportunity to share their
expertise about the American culture and language, while experiencing
the German language and culture in many different environments –
elementary school, German family, and simply around town The weekends
are open, but the host families often plan activities for their
visiting American students.
