DESCRIPTION
Students will study some of the earliest Jewish and Christian interpretations of selected texts in the Hebrew Bible, and identify the assumptions on which the earliest interpretations were based. Students will then learn some of the major modern interpretations of the same biblical texts and examine the assumptions underlying the modern interpretations. The central question each student will be asked to work out for himself or herself is this: can the ancient and modern interpretations be reconciled or are they utterly irreconcilable? The student's conclusion on this question will be explained in a term paper focused on the interpretation of a particular text in the Hebrew Bible.
