I was born and raised in Kenosha, WI where I attended St. Mary's Grade School and St. Joseph's High School. After graduating with a B.A. in Geography from Valparaiso University (1988), I received my M.A. and Ph.D. in Geography at the University of Iowa. I then served as a Research Associate and Instructor at the University of Utah from 1993-1994 and have subsequently held positions at the University of Memphis (1994-1999) and University of Arizona (1999-2005) before joining the USC faculty in August 2005.
My primary research and teaching interests are in biogeography and landscape ecology. As my research page shows, my interests are diverse, and I've worked in a broad range of geographic locations. The common thread that runs through much of my work, however, is the influence of human-imposed spatial patterns on ecological dynamics and how these dynamics are then manifested in altered ecosystem patterns and processes. This interest is perhaps most clear in my recent work on forest fragmentation, but it is also evident in prior research on invasive species and bottomland hardwood systems of the Midwestern, Southeastern and Southwestern U.S. Methodologically, much of my research involves the collection and analysis of ecological field data, but I also have secondary interests in forest ecosystem modeling, spatial analysis and geospatial technology. My teaching interests complement my research and lean heavily towards coupling classroom instruction with field methods and applications.
Feel free to look around the separate pages on my research, teaching and service activities, and check out my somewhat recently updated vita. If you are interested in joining our program at USC or want to talk with me about my own interests, don't hesitate to drop me a line or an email.
