Citation and Bibliography Examples

and Writing Check List

Citation Point 1

Please use the Chicago manual of style. So, your citation should look like this –

“Quote here” (Diamond 1992: 76).

– Note that the date is before the page number, that there is a colon after the date, that the parenthesis follow the quotation mark, and that the period is after the parenthesis.

Citation Point 2

Remember that if you are quoting a chapter in an edited volume you should write the name of the author of the chapter in the citation, not the name of the editor.

Bibliography Style Examples:

For an edited book:

Barker, Judith C. 1997. “Between Humans and Ghosts: The Decrepit Elderly in a Polynesian Society.” In The Cultural Context of Aging: Worldwide Perspectives, ed. Jay Sokolovsky, 407-424. Westport, Connecticut: Bergin & Garvey.

– Don’t forget to get the full title in there. Do not just write “The Cultural Context of Aging.”

For a book that is written by one author:

Diamond, Timothy. 1992. Making Gray Gold: Narratives of Nursing Home Care.  Chicago: The University of Chicago Press.

– Note that since he is the author of the whole book you do not need the chapter title or the page numbers.  Nor do you need to write the letters “ed.” in there because “ed” means “editor” and he is not the editor but the author (you silly person you). Also, be sure to get the whole title in there, not just “Making Gray Gold.” Also, note that the first line should be along the left margin and everything following that should be indented three to five spaces.
